正常情況下，兩人交談時，目光接觸能傳達這樣的意思：說話者偶爾看看聽者，以此確認聽者是否在認真傾聽；而對於聽者來說，他會一直看著說話的人，以此告訴他，自己正專心致誌地聽著。
假如與你說話的那個人直直地盯著你，好像要鎮住你似的，你便會感到惶恐不安。通常，說謊者往往就是看別人的時間過長，而使人起疑。因為他們以為直視別人的眼睛是誠實溝通的表現，結果恰恰相反。
實際上，長時間地相互凝視僅適合情人之間，他們喜歡溫柔地對視，用目光來傳達言語無法表達的愛意。
顯然，目光交流應該根據雙方的關係和特定場合來進行。
